Candide, or “Optimism”!

Last night, the Portland Opera folks were kind enough to let us sit in on the dress rehearsal of their latest production: “Candide”. Out of all the lovely productions they’ve invited us to in the past, I think Candide reigns as my personal favorite. It was funny, well-sung/acted, and has a woman with only one buttock! How can you not love it? But don’t just take my word for it. If you live in the are and would like to experience Candide for yourself, I have a special offer for 50% of tickets! Sweet, huh? Just follow this link: http://www.ticketmaster.com/Portland-Opera-tickets/artist/820919 and use the password GLITTER.

Also, many thanks to Morton’s Steakhouse for providing us with lovely free wine and food, including excellent mini steak sandwiches! It’s always such a treat to feel pampered for an evening.

I got quite a few sketches out of the evening, and I’m posting them all here for your enjoyment!

Life Drawing Returns!

It’s been a while since I sidled up to the old life drawing board. Well, sketchbook, really, but it doesn’t matter. I managed to get a few good things out of the session this time. My last few have been…well… they’ve been, to say the least.

This time, I was determined to get some good art out of it! To start, I decided that I’ve been getting too “precious” with my gesture sketching lately. This time around, I used my Pentel pocketbrush for the gestures, and saw a big difference. I got to take back some of the fluidity and spontaneity I used to have with my quicker work.

The rest of the night went in a slightly different direction. I’m trying to find ways to draw a little more realistically, but keep a cartoony feel to it. It’s fun to branch out.
I just wish I’d had a way to do ink washes, because these drawings took less time than I thought, and they are a little lacking in tone. Still, overlooking a few anatomy errors here and there, I think I achieved my goal. I’ll be trying this again next session!

Stumptown Comics Fest 2012!

Hey there!

If you’re going to be in the Portland area April 28th and 29th, why not stop by the Oregon Convention Center and check out the Stumptown Comics Fest? I’ll be there, at table C-3, doing my thing! I’d love to see your smiling face, and show you what I’ve been up to this year. I also have the good fortune of tabling with the wonderful Mr. Benjamin Dewey, of Tragedy Series fame!

Here’s a convenient map:

After A While

So, it’s been a while since I posted, but never fear, for new content is here RIGHT NOW! I bet you’ve all been wondering what has been consuming my time as of late(and if you haven’t, well, too bad!). I recently finished production on a brand new comic written by J. Kingman, who I collaborated on Legend of Larsha 2: Imaginational Magic with.
This new book is called “Queer Weather”, and it’s a lot more grown-up than Larsha, so it pushed me to draw in a different way. I’m really proud of the results, and here are a few of my favorite pages so you can see why! It debuted at Emerald City Comic Con this year, and will also be available at Stumptown at my table there!
If you want to see all the pages, I’ve uploaded them here.

Here, have a new link!

Hey folks! Sorry I’ve been a little short on fun new content these days. I’ve been lost in the recent deluge of paying work, and haven’t had much chance for doing fun personal illustrations. However, I’m finishing up with a few great things that I can’t wait to share with you all, as well as well as plotting out a brand new comic or two!

In the meantime, here’s a link to my brother’s blog, Mike Goes To Grad School. There’s no art, but you can read all about what it’s like to be a marine biologist who tracks fish in Southern California!

Emerald City Comic Con 2012

Hey folks!

Now seems like as good a time as any to announce that I’ll be in attendance at this year’s Emerald City Comic Con! I’m really looking forward to the show this year. Emerald City just gets better and better each time, and this year I’ll have a bunch of new prints and minis for you folks.

I’ll also be taking commissions, so if you’d like one, you can come see me at the show, or you can contact me at cattifer(a)gmail(dot)com and put yourself on the list now.

My work will also be included in this year’s Monsters and Dames book, so be sure to check that out as well!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Lost In Space

I did a piece for the IndieCade Holiday Party Art Show! It’s going to be auctioned off to support IndieCade.

Drawing on this card was a challenge, because the surface was slick and shiny. So all the cool effects-like stuff going on with this piece is just how my india ink naturally reacted to the paper. I also forced myself to use a lot of black. Of course… I blacked out some stuff on the figures before I realized I wanted to black in the background, so a few things got lost. Oh well!
